Every driver has one - a mental list of favourite stops for a brief rest or a good night's sleep. Places where they know they'll be both safe and well looked-after Now commercial vehicle safety and security specialist Viper Guard is asking them to share their secrets.
The Warwickshire-based company is already well-known as Britain's leading on-line and mail order distributor of its own additional cab security device, Lokgard, and of other makers' security products. But General Manager Debbie Jones also cares for drivers' comfort and peace of mind and says they can help each other by recommending favourite truckstops all over Europe.
Debbie pointed to the work of Secure European Truck Parking Operational Services, currently halfway through a 10bn-Euro two-year pilot project. SETPOS's first Secure Parking Area opened at Uhrsleben on the A2 between Hanover and Berlin last September and comes complete with secure fencing, patrols, constant monitoring, security lighting, and the checking of vehicles in and out.
"This is pioneering work and a great step forward," she said. "But SETPOS only aims to open five such facilities in the short term and needs to finalise its certification and verification procedures before taking the next step, which is to raise other SPAs to its standard.
"In the meantime there are countless drivers on the roads of Europe every day, in many cases new to the routes they're using and uncertain about what they'll find next time they stop.
"But most drivers already have places they know and trust, and by giving us details to post on our website, they'll help create a Europe-wide network of clean, decent, friendly, and secure stops.
"They'll also be rewarding the efforts of the better proprietors by ensuring them more custom in future - and who knows, it might encourage less scrupulous proprietors to pull their socks up!"
